An AI patrol robot will roam Deoksu Palace in central Seoul and the West Five Royal Tombs in Goyang, Gyeonggi, starting Monday to monitor the grounds and respond to emergencies.
One AI-powered patrol robot will be deployed at each site on a trial basis through the end of November, according to the Korea Heritage Service's Royal Palaces and Tombs Center on Friday.
The robots will autonomously patrol designated areas, using cameras and other sensors to detect potential problems with facilities or their surroundings.

They can, for example, detect fires, intruders or people experiencing medical emergencies in real time, alert a control center and issue warning announcements.
The patrol robots will be tested to determine whether they can help improve safety management at Korea's royal palaces and Joseon-era royal tombs.
The trial expands on an earlier test at Changdeok Palace in central Seoul, where a similar robot was introduced in February.
The robot ? named the Sunrabot ? carried out nine autonomous patrols per day over two months of trials.?The name is a play on sunragun, the guards who patrolled royal palaces and the capital during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

The robot at Deoksu Palace is expected to operate on a similar schedule, patrolling three times during the day and six times at night. The robot at the West Five Royal Tombs in Goyang is also expected to follow a similar schedule.
The two robots will be different types ? each suited to the terrain where it will be deployed.

A four-wheel-drive robot will patrol Deoksu Palace, which has relatively flat terrain, while a two-legged walking robot will be deployed at the West Five Royal Tombs, where the terrain includes slopes and rougher sections.
"Royal palaces and tombs have a wide range of conditions, including narrow and winding paths, slopes, unpaved sections, trees and cultural heritage structures," an official from the center said. "We want to compare and test whether the robots have the performance and functions suited to these different conditions."
Based on the results of this year's trials, the Korea Heritage Service plans to expand the use of advanced technologies, including AI and robotics, to improve safety management at national heritage sites.
